Many American cities face urgent ecological challenges. Balancing economic prosperity, urban development, and public health with environmental protection demands innovative solutions. In particular, densely urbanized cities like New York, Seattle and Chicago have growing populations and ever-increasing appetites for natural resources. Individually, Green Roofs create new green spaces and garden plots for city residents, and keep buildings cooler in the summer. Together, they can play a vital role in a city's ecosystem: absorbing rainwater, cooling and filtering the air, and providing habitat for birds, bees and butterflies. An extensive network of green roofs would become a public infrastructure for the city- protecting the rivers and estuary, improving air quality, and lowering temperatures throughout the city during the hottest months.
